TRTF Board Welcomes New Trustees!

The Texas Retired Teachers Foundation (TRTF) Board of Trustees is proud to welcome two new trustees to the board. The new trustees will assume the positions left vacant by Carolyn Lance and La Vonne Rogers, whose terms came to end on June 30, 2017 after nine years of dedicated service.

Beginning July 1, 2017, Ms. Mary Nell Short and Ms. Carla Meuth will begin serving their first three-year terms. TRTF Trustees are eligible to serve up to three consecutive three-year terms.

Mary Nell Short, new TRTF Trustee

Mary Nell Short, who resides in Wake Village, taught sophomore English in Salina, Kansas, as well as 8th Grade Math at Roosevelt Jr.High in Little Rock, Arkansas before making her way to Texas. In Texarkana at Texas High School, Mary Nell taught Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and served as Math Department Chair. She also served as Head of School for the St. James Day School in Texarkana.

Her hobbies and volunteer activities include reading and yard work, the Salvation Army Food Pantry, and the Texarkana Arts and Humanities Council. She is also very active in the Texas Retired Teachers Association,

Regarding her appointment to the TRTF Board of Trustees, Mary Nell says "I hope that I can add some helpful thoughts to the different programs, and I want to be actively involved in those programs. I look forward to helping the Foundation continue to make a positive difference for our active and retired educators."

Carla Meuth, new TRTF Trustee

Born and raised in Sugar Land, Carla Meuth has spent most of her life in Fort Bend county. Her tremendous work experience includes teaching kindergarten, special education, working with students who have dyslexia, and coaching sports activities.

In her personal time, Carla has served as teen chairman and head counselor with the state organization for Texas War on Drugs, helping to organize leadership training sessions across Texas campuses to promote a drug-free environment for all. She has also been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for 25 years.

Immediately after her retirement, Carla immersed herself in her local TRTA unit, the Fort Bend Harris Retired Educators. She currently is serving the second year of a three-year term as President of the local unit.

Carla says "it is an honor to be nominated for membership on the TRTF Board of Trustees. I look forward to meeting these challenges and engage our members to rally around public schools and the ongoing efforts that support retired and teachers now and in the future."
